What is a window? What does it do? What are images? And what do they do?
Untitled is a pool of images that Sinaida Michalskaja produced over the period of one year. They depict a specific window in the various fashions of its appearance depending on the state of the world around it.
In Ideas, Ideals, Deals at 8Q in Cologne she is showing a narrow selection of these works alongside a screen displaying the note of a dream. Thinly framed, the bare glossy prints show the image of a windowpane as a strangely distorting, still and yet shivering surface.
What is a window?
The window is a rectangular shape that spans a surface from its four corners.
What does it do?
It creates an image. And another one, and another one, and another one.
What is an image?
A composition of information within a defined space.
And what do they do?
They make windows.
Michalskaja works with the surface of the window as a place where the layers of the three-dimensional world encounter each other and interact with the mechanisms of a two-dimensional space. Composed of a frame and a glass surface, the window reflects and shapes an image, shifting visual constellations on its surface, absorbing, condensing, reflecting and blending its surroundings. The window’s images are the results of the process that the window alone initiates.
In a sense, these windows can be seen as alternatives to technical, algorithm-based images. The are produced in a similar way by an automated process, infused with randomized information and prone to the irreversible human factor. These windows, however, unmistakably assert their state as physical, breakable and still objects set in time and space. They make themselves available as projections of the world that they draw images from.
